Behaviorism And Behaviorism Theories Of Psychology Essay

William James is credited as the founder of American psychology. He believed in observing everyday psychological experiences such as attention, memory, and reasoning. James also believed that the mind way very active in nature. Behaviorism says that you have to look at psychology in a way that is observable and objective. The main focus was on how we react to stimuli. Unlike Ebbinghaus both James’s view and behaviorism stray from introspection as opposed to observation. Gestalt psychology emphasized people’s tendency to organize the information they receive. Like behaviorism and James’s view, Gestalt psychology did not agree with Ebbinghaus’s introspection. Unlike behaviorism Gestalt psychology did not view things as a response-cost unit. Frederic Bartlett saw that people make meaningful and systematic errors. Like Gestalt psychology, Bartlett focused on how our brain organized information, even in ways that are mistakes. The cognitive approach was the res ult of research being done on many aspects of human cognition. This caused questions to arise that Behaviorism could explain, like problem solving. Behaviorism could also only focus on what was observable, however psychologist were realizing that cognition was much more complex than that. King Leopold II and Belgian Imperialism In 1865, King Leopold II succeeded his father to the thrown of Belgium and thus began one of the most brutal and insensitive periods of imperialism ever to exist. From manipulative treaties to straight forward intimidation, Leopold dominated his empire like no other. He was cruel, deceptive, and downright evil, yet it took the world over twenty years to recognize this. The record of King Leopold’s atrocity is an interesting account of how a jealous man could inflict some of the most disgusting forms of oppression upon his fellow members of the human race. When Leopold came to power in 1865, he was incredibly disappointed at Belgium’s lack of power in the imperial†¦show more content†¦This lack of restriction allowed Leopold II to use the most horrible methods possible to accomplish his goal of obtaining mass wealth. The native people and captured Muslim slaves were forced to work as either ivory hunters or rubber gatherers, jobs that often kept men away from their families for many months at a time. When the natives finally rebelled, Leopold’s private army, the Force Publique was called in to subdue them. After this task was accomplished, Leopold used his army to force the Muslim slave traders out of Africa under the guise of performing a great humanitarian act when, in reality, the reason for their expulsion was Leopold’s desire to control the upper portion of the Congo river. At this point, Leopold’s enterprise had not made a substantial amount of money, but this was all about to change. In the mid-1890’s, the inflatable rubber tire was invented, thus beginning the use of the most brutal forced labor tactics ever known to man. With the increased demand for rubber, Leopold needed more men to journey deeper into the jungle in search of plentiful wild rubber. To obtain these extra men, Leopold decided to tax the African tribes by forcing them to provide his rubber industry with ever possible man they had. When these condition were not met, Leopold would hold the wives and children of the men hostage until they submitted to work. The Hudson River And Pcb Pollution The Hudson River and PCB Pollution The Hudson River is a body of water that stretches for 315 miles from the Adirondack Mountains to the Battery in Manhattan, reaching its deepest point of 216 feet in the Highlands near Constitution Island and West Point and reaches its widest point of 3 miles across at Havestraw. This river is one of the most beautiful and scenic of the Tri-State area. Unfortunately, it happens to be New York's most polluted river. The river has been influenced upon since the early 1600's, when Englishman Henry Hudson commanded the Dutch ship Half Moon on an exploration of the river, certain that he had discovered a trade route to China. It soon dawned that this was no Atlantic-to-Pacific passage but an Edenlike place of awesome potential-a river valley teeming with prospect and spirit that was worth fighting for. In the centuries that followed, the fight for the river and its commerce never stopped, and still continues to the present. Then during the Industrial Revolution, with the advent of hulking manufacturing plants on the riverbanks, everything changed. The river became a sewer, cut off from the people around it by the electrification of the railroads. The 1825 completion of the Erie Canal instantly opened trade to the Midwest by linking Troy to Buffalo and established the Hudson River as the major commerce channel for New York City. Tycoons transformed the landscape in New York and across the country with the railroad, and the Hudson River valley became a hotbed for iron mining, limestone quarrying and clear-cutting. Toward the 19th century, when dynamite blasting was reducing the face of the Palisades to rubble, conservationists became alarmed that something was being lost to progress. In 1900, New York and New Jersey established the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to preserve the cliffs from further quarrying. Although conservation efforts continued into the 20th century, there was no progress to protect the Hudson River and its banks from industrial pollution. Some of the largest factories in the nation started production on the Hudson River, including Anaconda Wire and Cable in Hastings-on-Hudson and GM in the present day Sleepy Hallow, discharging waste into the river. There are numerous known contaminated sites around the U.S. Among the most dangerous of these, and of particular concern to residents of the Hudson Valley, are the forty ?hot spots? in the Hudson River resulting from the dumping and leakage from General Electric plants at Fort Edward and Hudson Falls. From 1947 to 1977, these two plants legally discharged from 500,000 to 1.5 million pounds of PCBs into the Hudson, and unknowingly saturated the bedrock beneath both sites with at least that much again. There are PCBs in Hudson River water, biota, and sediment from Hudson Falls to New York City - 200 miles that comprise the nations largest Superfund site. Pure PCBs are oozing out of the bedrock to this day, constantly recontaminating the river and over 300,000 pounds remain concentrated in bottom sediments of the river today. The spread of PCBs throughout the Hudson River and the food chain, which it supports, has created one of the most extensive hazardous waste problems in the nation. Polychlorinated biphenyl's (PCBs) are a group of synthetic oil-like chemicals (therefore insoluble in water) of the organochlorine family. Until their toxic nature was recognized and their use was banned in the 1970s, they were widely used as insulation in electrical equipment, particularly transformers. Reputable chemists have since concluded, ?it was probably a mistake ever to make or use PCBs.? These are serious poisons, which have been shown to cause damage to the reproductive, neurological and immune systems of wildlife and humans and are known to cause cancer. Exposure has also been linked to behavioral damage. Specifically, because PCBs in the body mimic estrogen, women of childbearing age and their infants are particularly susceptible to a variety of development and reproductive disorders. Once in the body, these compounds do one of two things: they block the normal passage of hormones into their receptors, or, mimic the hormone itself and enter the receptor in lieu of the ho rmone. By doing so can irrevocably alter and damage the development of the organism.

Transcendentalists were fighting for the freedom of slaves and it was only natural that those women of the movement would identify with this cause. Even though social oppression doesn’t have the same negative connotation as a word like slavery it was enslaving the minds, hearts, and finances of Nineteenth Century women and characters. Margaret Fuller was an author, critic, editor and teacher who possessed great influence on American women. She was a brilliant and highly educated member of the Transcendentalist movement; she challenged the world both intellectually and emotionally. Women who attended her lectures found Fullers influence life-changing. Her works profoundly affected the womens rights movements. Hester Prynne is the main character of Nathaniel Hawthornes romantic novel, The Scarlet Letter, which is set in seventeenth-century Puritan New England. As a young woman, Hester married an elderly scholar, Roger Chillingworth, who sent her ahead to America to live but never followed. While waiting for him, she had an affair with a Puritan minister, after which she gave birth to Pearl. Hester is immediately ostracized from the stern community and endures years of loneliness. From this alienated point she is able to make observations about her community, particularly about its treatment of women. There seems to be a connection. Hester is a fictional character who is shunned from her community as punishment for her adulterous sins. In contrast Fuller was a highly educated writer and critic who played an important role in the American Renaissance in literature and to mid-nineteenth century reform movements. However, both are forced to suppress their own emotional needs because there was no room for this kind of expression in the strict Puritan community. Every human being needs the opportunity to express their feelings; otherwise the emotions are bottled up and locked away. Unfortunately, Puritan society did not permit any kind of emotional expression, thus the characters had to seek alternate means to relieve their personal desires. Luckily, for at least some of the main characters, Hawthorne provides a sanctuary in the form of the mysterious forest. It provides an escape from the strict mandates of law and religion, to a refuge where men, as well as women, can open up and be themselves. Here in the forest we see the real Hester, who has been hidden for years under a shield of shame. It was this alienation that put Hester in a unique position. She was able to look upon society from the outside, and make acute observations about the community, particularly about its treatment of women. The text describes Fuller in a similar way. A seemingly modern American intellectual figure that was conflicted and alienated. However Fuller was a great thinker who, despite or because of her alienation, looked hopefully to popular, social transformations. Almost as though the life of Margaret Fuller was the kind of life that Hester Prynne dreamed of living. Perhaps Hester deserves more credit than she thinks. Who knows what she could have achieved for the rights of women and social reformation had she lived in the nineteenth century, and, like Fuller spent great deals of time reading, thinking, and writing. Hester Prynne could have been a revolutionary. The saddest part of The Scarlet Letter is Hesters repression by the Puritans. Without these constraints, her intellect could have blossomed. Just as women who attended Margaret Fullers talks found her influence life-changing, the women of Hester Prynnes community came to her home for advice and comfort in times of hardship and frustration. It is not difficult to see Hester transformed several hundred years into our own present, conducting something like a women’s rally. Another parallel between these two women is the way they placed their own best judgment before any religious doctrine. However, despite their different backgrounds, Hester Prynne and Margaret Fuller seem to have had similar characters. Both suffered alienation during their lifetimes, and both realized injustices in society as a result of this isolation. The main difference between them was that Margaret Fuller had the opportunity to express her ideas, whereas Hester, a woman stained by sin, had no chance. Did My Jeans Just Rip Back in middle school, I always wanted to wear skinny jeans. Wearing them would mean I was up there with the cool kids. But I knew that I was way too chubby, and wearing them would be a complete mistake. At the time I was struggling with a common issue known as obesity. An issue that is affecting many people physically and mentally around the world. Obesity can change our looks, lifestyles, and also change the way we feel. It has come to a point where we need to be smarter and more self-educated about the topic.   Furthermore the term obesity, is described as a medical condition that occurs when people carry excess weight or body fat that might affect their health. Many doctors determine obesity in a person by seeing if they have a high body mass index. A body mass index, or BMI, is an important tool that many doctors to determine whether a person has an appropriate weight according to their age, sex and height. In order for a person to become obese, they would have to be doing one of these factors according to the website, â€Å"MedicalNewsToday. One factor is consuming more calories than our daily intake. The extra calories will be stored as fat, and can lead to more weight gain and obesity. For example, the amount for daily calories for men is 2,500, if I were to consume 2,550 I would gain weight â€Å"surplus,† and if I would consume 2,400, I would lose weight, â€Å"deficit.† Another factor is sleep deprivation, and is when you are not getting enough sleep. When we miss sleep, our body produces ghrelin, which is a hormone that stimulates our appetite. Lastly, the obesity gene, which is also called the fat-mass and obesity-associated gene. In this gene there is also the ghrelin hormone, and it affects the release of growth hormones and how the body accumulates fat. People with this gene will have a greater risk of being obese, because it can damage the amount of ghrelin we have in our body. But there has to be a question, on why obese people continue to eat. We can be watching TV, playing video-games, and we didnt even realize how much food we had put in our mouths. The second reason is our stress, which can increase our bodys release of the hormone cortisol. This hormone increases appetite and makes us crave for those fatty and sugary foods, which can lead to binge-eating. One day we might show a lack of motivation, maybe because of problems with school, work or even something with our families. The first thing we seem to do is think that eating will make all of our problems go away. For example, a teenager may have stress about an upcoming exam. Instead of studying, he would be seen wandering in the kitchen and constantly eating sugary foods like donuts or ice cream. In another example, a person may have just gotten fired, and now he thinks his life is over. He would drink a ton of beers, eat greasy and sugary food just so he can ignore his crisis. This is what can make someone more adapted to becoming obese, because we are constantly consuming food due to the stress of our daily life. In addition, obesity can also increase our chances at having many health issues and disorders. According to the website, â€Å"WebMD†, obese people are 25% more likely to suffer mood and anxiety disorders than people who are not obese.   When we are obese, we may often not want to enjoy daily activities. An example is someone who is seen as obese, may not want to go to school because people would make fun of him. This is called anxiety, and can further lead to depression. When obese people have anxiety or depression, it makes it even harder for them to lose weight, in fact they would gain more weight. To a point, where this extra weight will make them more likely to have high blood pressure and also high cholesterol which can lead to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. When you see someone who is overweight, the first thing you should do is try to help them. Making fun of them will only make their problem even worse, and self-esteem is important for losing weight.  Ã‚   Moreover, the ability to lose weight and prevent obesity can be challenging. However, nobody said it was impossible to shed those pounds. Losing weight is not easy, but if you have a plan you will be motivated. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there isnt really a solution to obesity but we can promote healthy living behaviors. The first thing to do is to check your body mass index (BMI), which can tell you if you are maintaining a healthy weight. It is one of the most useful and accurate measures when it comes to obesity. Another thing is too eat healthier, which can be one of the most difficult things to do. When we go in our kitchen, the first thing we want to do is eat something sugary or unhealthy. This will ensure that you are eating healthy foods, and also tracking what you a re putting in your body. Lastly, we have to make sure we are getting a sufficient amount of rest. This hormone stimulates the regeneration of body tissues, building of muscle, fat breakdown, and balances the blood sugar levels in our body.   Obesity is a very serious issue, and can damage a person’s ability to enjoy life. Every time we go to the supermarket or restaurant, we have to make sure to realize what we are about to purchase or eat. At first it may taste good, but then we realize what it does to our body. Sometimes it may change our mood, increase depression, or even add weight. When you want to lose weight, remember that it may not be easy at first, but you have to stay motivated.
